Soundscapes of the St. Lawrence River
One day, someone remarked to me: “Water is just water.” That phrase, in its disconcerting simplicity, contained the ultimate challenge. How do you do justice to one of the world’s greatest sources of fresh water? To reduce the St. Lawrence to “just water” is to ignore its heartbeat. It is not merely a waterway; it is the vital artery of our history, our identity, and our collective memory.
The question then became unavoidable: how can I, through attentive and selective listening, weave a sonic tapestry capable of revealing the unique characteristics of this exceptional environment? I wanted to move beyond the surface, to capture the vibrations that define the very soul of the landscape.
It took me four years, working part-time through the shifting cycles of the seasons, to traverse this vast territory. I sought out the most representative environments, waiting for the moments when the river truly spoke. From East to West, I placed my microphones in significant corridors, practicing a form of deep, intentional listening to capture a nature that is as rare as it is precious.
The result is more than an archive; it is an immersive sonic voyage. By using raw material as a living medium, I have composed a journey that invites the listener to inhabit the St. Lawrence rather than just observe it. It is an invitation to reconnect with the “sound soul” of our land, a testament to the invisible, audible threads that bind us to this immense river.
