About

I am a dedicated field recordist and sound artist specializing in the high-fidelity capture of natural environments. My journey to this field follows a past life as a financial advisor, a chapter that honed the meticulous precision and technical rigour I now apply to the acoustic world. My work is defined by a commitment to technical transparency and environmental patience, ensuring that every recording, from the smallest insect to the vastest thunderstorm, is preserved with absolute clarity. While my practice involves significant technical rigour, it is ultimately an artistic pursuit, one driven by passion rather than profit.

Based in Montreal I travel globally to record the voices of ecosystems that are often overlooked.

Listening With Intent

To me, sound is the most honest way to experience a landscape. While photography captures a moment in light, sound captures the physical vibration of a place, the true breath of an ecosystem. My journey as a sound recordist began with a simple fascination for the complex textures found in remote wilderness, and has since evolved into a dedicated mission to archive the acoustic heritage of our planet. This work requires a unique form of presence; one must learn to listen intensely and with intent, remaining responsive to everything occurring in the present moment. This deep listening is the foundation of my process, both during the capture in the field and throughout the evolution of the sound afterward.

The Technical Approach

The technique is merely the starting point. I treat raw sound material as a living medium, allowing it to evolve into complex sound compositions and immersive installations that go far beyond simple field recording. However, recording in the wild presents unique challenges that studio sound never encounters. Whether dealing with extreme humidity in the tropics or sub-zero temperatures in the mountains, I utilize a specialized kit designed for low-noise performance and rugged durability.

Mentorship & Professional Development

My practice has been shaped by immersive residencies and masterclasses alongside some of the world’s most influential figures in sound art and field recording. These experiences have bridged the gap between scientific documentation and abstract sonic composition.

Creative Composition & Absolute Listening

In the Brazilian Amazon, I participated in a week-long residency at Lac Marmori facilitated by Francisco López and Slavek Kwi. This program challenged traditional notions of field recording, focusing instead on critical inquiry and the transformation of environmental sounds into autonomous sonic compositions through a practice of dedicated, immersive listening.

Technical Rigour in Extreme Environments

During an intensive residential course in Akureyri, Iceland, I trained under Chris Watson and Jez riley French. This mentorship focused on capturing high-fidelity audio in demanding geothermal landscapes, utilizing specialized techniques like hydrophones for subaquatic soundscapes and contact microphones to push the limits of both equipment and perception.

Scientific Documentation & Field Craft

At the Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s program in the Nevada Mountains, I refined the art and science of bird sound recording under the guidance of Greg Budney. This training emphasized professional wildlife documentation, species identification by ear, and the patient field craft, camouflage and stillness, required to capture undisturbed animal behavior.

Ethical Fieldcraft

My presence in the field is governed by a “leave no trace” philosophy. I believe that the best recordings come from a place of respect; by minimizing my acoustic footprint and using long-range parabolic systems or unattended drop-rigs, I am able to capture wildlife behavior that is natural and undisturbed.
